Pensions Committee Also Passes a Couple of Good Bills on Adjunct Health, TRS Contribution Rate

The House Pensions Committee also passed a couple of good bills today. HB 2127 by Rep. Donna Howard (D-Austin) would make it easier for adjunct faculty at community colleges to gain access to the state health-insurance program. HB 1383 by Rep. Jim Keffer (R-Eastland) would raise the state’s contribution to TRS substantially, to 6.9 percent in fiscal 2014 and 7.4 percent in fiscal 2015 (up from the current 6.4 percent). Both bills passed unanimously. Meanwhile, another Education Austin member, Peter Kircher, testified effectively for a cost-of-living increase for TRS retirees, who have seen their purchasing power decrease more than 25 percent since they last received a cost-of-living increase 12 years ago.
