SBOE Chair Nominee Clears First Hurdle

SBOE chair nominee Barbara Cargill received the benefit of the doubt today from a key Democratic senator, opening the way to approval of her appointment by the Senate Nominations Committee. Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) had questioned Cargill closely last week on past statements suggesting she’d support teaching of creationism in school and had screened expert textbook reviewers to ensure their political reliability. The Republican nominee from The Woodlands, Gov. Rick Perry’s choice for the top job at the SBOE, assured Watson that she has mended her ways, and Cargill also received crucial support from one of the Board’s moderate Republicans, Thomas Ratliff of Mount Pleasant, who vouched for her evenhandedness.
