State House Education Panel Takes Up Accountability Issues

The House Public Education Committee meets Tuesday at 8 a.m. to consider key issues of educational accountability and opportunity relating to Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath. Texas AFT President Louis Malfaro is among those who have been invited to testify. The specific interim study assignments from Speaker Joe Straus that are the subject of Tuesday’s hearing read as follows:

1) Recommend any measures needed at the state level to prevent unintended
punitive consequences to both students and districts in the state
accountability system as a result of Hurricane Harvey and its aftermath.

2) Examine the educational opportunities offered to students displaced by
Hurricane Harvey throughout the state and the process by which districts
enroll and serve those students. Recommend any changes that could improve
the process for students or help districts serving a disproportionate
number of displaced students.
