Texas AFT is more than legal protection and benefits (although we offer the best of those too). Being a member of our union means you’re part of a family of educators and employees with a shared vision for public education.

Texas AFT is the only Texas school employee organization with a significant number of local unions and Associate Membership Program offices to provide direct representation for educators and school employees.

With more than 65,000 members, Texas AFT is a statewide organization with 38 local unions and regional offices. Nationally, we’re affiliated with the 1.7 million-member American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO, with 12 million members.

Bonus: Not one of those members is your boss. Texas AFT does not accept school administrators as members.

Joining a Local Union

We have 38 local unions in districts across the state. You can see if your district already has a local union and find the application for each in the dropdown list at the bottom of this page (click her or use our button). If so, you’ll join your local organization and become an automatic member of our state and national organizations too. Questions about joining a local union? Call us at 1-800-222-3827.
