On Wednesdays, We Wear Red
Starting this week, turn your social media channels red each Wednesday in support of students, educators and school employees.
Our goal is to show our numbers across platforms and to push local leaders and elected officials to show their support too.
While we’ve seen some districts and counties delay start dates for in-person instruction and move closer to our common sense plan for safe school reopenings, there’s still work to do this back-to-school season.
Members of the Houston Federation of Teachers want us all to come together each Wednesday in a digital show of force, urging the Texas Education Agency, Gov. Greg Abbott and Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to put the safety of educators, staff and students first.
We need to speak out — and keep speaking out — for our health and safety.
What You Can Do Each Wednesday
- Post a picture of yourself on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram wearing Red with your message about the need to #ReopenSafely, #ProtectStudents, #ProtectEducators and #ProtectSupportStaff.
- Replace your social media profile photos with this shared image.
- Add a Facebook Frame to your profile picture
- Download and share this Safety First sign. Print the sign to use in your own photos.
- Download the Safety Matters sign and write in your own concerns. Print the sign to use in your photos.
- Tag your local and state elected officials in posts. Ask them to show their support and wear red too. If you’re looking for Twitter handles, check our #TxLege list to find your members.
Other Actions to Take
- Texas schools and districts need funds in this pandemic and long afterward. Legislation is sitting in the U.S. Senate right now that can provide that money. Send our e-letter urging Sen. John Cornyn and Sen. Ted Cruz to pass the HEROES Act now.
- Our local unions and associate members are in their districts lobbying school boards and district leaders to delay in-person instruction and provide adequate safety measures. Check with your local union or AMP representative about local actions already in motion.
- Stay up-to-date on news coming out of the TEA, as well as your rights and options in regards to COVID-19 and school reopenings.
- Not a member? Talk to an organizer about why you should join our union and the options in your district.
