Election season isn’t over yet for many Texans

Gov. Greg Abbott Friday set a special election for December 11 to fill the seat of state Sen. Sylvia Garcia, the Houston Democrat who resigned and was elected to Congress last week.

The filing deadline for candidates to run for the seat is Nov. 16, and early voting starts Nov. 26. However, State Reps. Carol Alvarado and Ana Hernandez, both Democrats, already had announced for the race last spring after Garcia won her primary for the congressional seat.

The Senate District 6 seat covers a large portion of northeast and southeast Houston and surrounding suburbs.

Other December 11 runoffs of interest include a School Board race in Austin ISD and a race for the Austin Community College Board of Trustees. For the Austin ISD at-large District 9 position, our Education Austin local has endorsed Arati Singh. And for the at-large seat on the ACC Board, our ACC AFT local has endorsed Stephanie Gharakhanian.
