Good morning Texas! Another election day has arrived–at least for some of you–so if you are among the lucky few, get out and vote! Today runoffs will be held for several local school board races and city council races, as well as a special election for a Texas state Senate seat. Check with your local county and city websites for more information, but here are some races of note:
The special election is to fill the state Senate seat of Sen. Sylvia Garcia, the Houston Democrat who resigned and was elected to Congress in November. Senate District 6 covers a large portion of northeast and southeast Houston and surrounding suburbs.
The frontrunners for that race are State Reps. Carol Alvarado and Ana Hernandez, both Democrats, who already had announced for the race last spring after Garcia won her primary for the congressional seat.
Other runoffs of interest include a School Board race in Austin ISD and a race for the Austin Community College Board of Trustees. For the Austin ISD at-large District 9 position, our Education Austin local has endorsed Arati Singh. And for the at-large seat on the ACC Board, our ACC AFT local has endorsed Stephanie Gharakhanian.
