SBEC preview: Exams and Then Some

The State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) will meet in Austin on July 23 & 24. After powering through several chapters of rulemaking in order to implement the Preparing and Retaining Educators Through Partnerships allotment as required in House Bill 2, the board will entertain a lighter agenda this month. However, they will also engage in the annual work session where they will preview the year ahead. Texas AFT will be watching a few items next week. 

First, the board will hear a report on the status of National Board Certification and its future applicability to the Teacher Incentive Allotment beyond this year. While we remain vocal against this type of outcomes-based compensation system, we are also adamant that additional dollars should follow additional training and expertise-- like this type of advanced certification.

The Texas Education Agency will also be providing SBEC with an update on the development of the Texas Test of Educator Proficiency. This is the performance-based certification exam that is being developed to replace the Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities and is set to begin a pilot rollout in the 2027-2028 academic year.
