SBOE Opens Public Comment Window for Social Studies and Literary Lists

The SBOE opened the official public comment windows for the proposals that were voted on at its April meeting. We invited concerned parents and teachers to submit comments on the required literary list that correlate to the K-12 English language arts standards and the K-8 Spanish language arts and reading.

At the April SBOE meeting, Texas AFT testified that the lists were too long and may rob teaching from other areas of ELAR or SLAR instruction, also leaving little time for teacher autonomy or student selected reading. These lists contain required Biblical readings and lack diversity in their authors and stories. And we remind our readers that because these lists will be adopted into the Texas Essentials Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), these will be eligible to be tested on the statewide assessment system.

We urge you to submit your comments via the TEA website above and also contact your SBOE representative to provide direct feedback. The public comment window is open from now through June 15.
