Get it done! TRS retirees need health-care cost relief NOW

Send your letter now!

The Texas House and Texas Senate both have passed competing bills providing $212 million to cut rising health-care costs they recently imposed on retired school employees. The House passed HB 20 and the Senate passed an equivalent provision as  part of SB 19 in direct response to grass-roots pressure from retired and active school employees. However, with just a week to go in the current special session, these bills need to be reconciled so retirees actually get the help they deserve instead of just a show of good intentions that come to nothing.

Pls send your e-letter now to your state representative and state senator with a blunt message: Get it done!

Retired teachers and other school employees got the job done all their lives for the schoolchildren of Texas. It’s the Legislature’s job to get it done now for these dedicated public servants. Send your letter now!

I retired when I was 62, I was very tired and it turned out that I had developed a blood cancer, but because I had decent TRS insurance that became a medicare supplement when I became 65, I got the care I needed, and now I have a chance to enjoy a few more years of life after a very hard, but immensely rewarding career. Not moneywise, but in the joy of seeing children succeed.

My sister has been a dedicated, compassionate special ed teacher working with autistic children, severely learning disabled, , and children removed from their homes, and placed in a residential school setting. She has now retired after reaching the rule of 80, and under this new set of rules she will be completely UNable to afford medical care crisis if one occurs before she turns 66. Is that how you treat retired teachers? EVERY TEACHER WHO WILL FALL IN THIS HUGE CRACK NEEDS TO SHOW UP IN THE GALLERY THIS WEEK AND ON ELECTION DAY TO SHAME THESE LEGISLATORS WHO HAVE VOTED THEMSELVES AS STATE EMPLOYEES A COMPLETE, WORRY FREE PACKAGE AND LEFT OLDER TEACHERS IN A BAD PREDICAMENT! You might as well give them a loaded gun and say “take your chances, play some Russian roulette with your remaining years before medicare” There are no words for how despicable this dishonorable treatment affects teachers who have given years of their lives for the children of the State of Texas,
It is your job to raise the taxes fairly, equitably and serve all the people equally, not just enriching your cronies, passing out favors and putting your buddies in good positions to enrich themselves. That is exactly what it looks like down in the trenches where the teachers do the best they can with an ever increasing burden. GET IT DONE IN THE NEXT SIX DAYS!

I honor you and your sister for your service to kids. Thank you! I promise to continue to work on your behalf and all other Texas Educators, to provide you with the quality health care during service and in retirement, you deserve.
