What do we do when public education is under attack? Stand up and fight back.
Our union is the strongest voice for public school employees in Texas. We don’t just talk the talk. We walk the walk, advocating for your best interests at the state, local, and national levels.
The Legislature and our state leaders have shown their true colors, passing a private school voucher that will endanger our schools’ funding, continuing baseless attacks on our colleges and universities, and refusing to listen to the teachers, paras, and support staff struggling to make ends meet.
Now is the time join an organization fighting to win a better Texas – one with public schools, colleges, and universities funded to thrive, not just survive.

It’s not about whose side you’re on. It’s about who’s on your side.

We’re all in for Texas teachers
Although incredibly rewarding, teaching is a profession that’s also filled with complexities that can be difficult to navigate, especially for those just starting out. From managing a classroom effectively to balancing personal well-being, the path can often feel overwhelming.
That’s where joining your colleagues in your union comes in. We’re here to help one another with the resources we need to flourish – even in the most difficult professional and personal moments.
Welcome to Teaching Conversation Series
This series of recorded conversations between new teachers and experts in the field is available on demand on AFT’s Share My Lesson, a free database of educator-created lesson plans and teaching resources. The series covers topics, including classroom management, family engagement, & civics instruction.
All episodes are available on demand & worth one hour of PD credit from the Texas Education Agency.
Real-Time Help with T-TESS Evaluations
As overwhelming as it may feel at the start of a new school year, preparing for your T-TESS evaluations is an opportunity to set yourself up for success.
Texas AFT and our members across the state are here to support you, through training sessions and with real-time answers in our group chat.

We’re all in for support staff & paraprofessionals
School support personnel — from nurses to cafeteria workers to bus drivers — make our public schools run. Too often, they’re not treated like the valuable, vital employees they are.
Texas AFT welcomes all non-administrative staff in our public schools to join our union. And we fight for them, too.
Respect in Your Paycheck
For years, Texas AFT has been the only educator organization fighting for support staff raises at the Texas Legislature.
In 2025, we finally won them. House Bill 2, the $8.5 billion school finance bill, includes a first-ever Support Staff Allotment with $500 million dedicated to raises for paraprofessionals, support staff, and other non-classroom employees.
Read more about what’s in HB 2 as we prepare to fight at the local level to distribute this new money fairly.
Support for Your Well-Being
Many people contribute to the education and care of our kids during the school day.
Although they may not be the first to come to mind for people who don’t work in our schools, paraprofessional and support staff are indispensable employees who make our schools run smoothly.
They also experience all the stress and struggles that teachers do. That’s why our union offers free wellness webinars and resources to help take care of you while you take care of our kids.

We’re all in for higher education faculty & staff
Texas AFT advocates for thriving schools for our students, from pre-K all the way through post-doc. We represent faculty and staff from colleges and universities across Texas and are proud to have been the first to merge state affiliations with AFT and the American Association of University Professors in 2024.
Real Solutions for Higher Education
Our higher education members have fought tooth and nail at the Texas Legislature in recent sessions to fend off ceaseless attacks on our colleges and universities.
At the national level, as extremists attempt to undermine higher education by defunding our public institutions and eroding the freedom to teach and learn, our union is championing real solutions to ensure that our colleges and universities are accessible and affordable for all students, fair employers for their faculty and staff, and safe havens of academic freedom, free speech, and critical thinking.

Student Debt Relief
The new administration in Washington, D.C., has created a lot of uncertainty for working people burdened by student debt.
While we can’t yet predict what comes next with student loan repayment, your union is here to help you every step of the way, whether you’re in repayment, seeking Public Service Loan Forgiveness, or just trying to understand what’s happening.
After months of economic uncertainty, student loan borrowers are facing a confusing system and rising political threats to college affordability.
Watch this May 2025 webinar from AFT that will help you navigate student loan repayment and understand your rights under Income Driven Repayment plans.
