While Gov. Abbott was outlining his plan for reopening some of Texas, Democratic legislators yesterday were pushing for immediate steps to help businesses and individuals who have been dramatically impacted by the pandemic-related shutdowns.
Their list included:
- Expanding Medicaid to provide more health-care to low-income or unemployed Texans.
- Ensuring that health-care workers at every local level have the personal protective equipment they need.
- Requiring a significant boost in COVID-19 testing before allowing reopenings of businesses. (Texas has consistently ranked near the bottom in testing rates).
- Making sure state officials are transparent about the statistics for infection and deaths in nursing homes.
