Texas AFT thanks governor for order closing campuses for on-site instruction for remainder of school year.

Dear Governor Abbott:

On behalf of the Texas American Federation of Teachers, thank you for responding to our concerns regarding COVID-19’s impacts on Texas public schools and physically closing campuses for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. We know this decision was extremely difficult, and we appreciate your commitment to the health and safety of Texans.

While our teachers and school employees miss their students dearly and want to be providing them the best instruction possible, your order is the right thing to do, especially since it will allow districts to focus more on what it will take to open schools and have them humming academically in the fall.

Please know that public school workers are committed to our 5.4 million public school children. Teachers will continue to be a resource for students and their families during this crisis. They are dedicated in their service to providing academic support and instruction to ensure students have the highest access to educational opportunities possible under these unprecedented circumstances.

Sincerely,
Zeph Capo
President, Texas AFT
