Incoming school board members are educators and parents who ran to right the ship
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Last night, Cy-Fair ISD voters elected three new trustees to set the direction of the school district for the next four years. Lesley Guilmart, Dr. Cleveland Lane, and Kendra Camarena are educators and parents who ran on the promise of listening to the school community and working to meet those needs — not advancing a fringe political agenda to satisfy far-right mega-donors and local GOP clubs. All three newly elected trustees were endorsed by Cy-Fair AFT.
“Cy-Fair families don’t want hard-line politicians and ideologues who voted to ban science lessons, slash bus routes, and permanently close school libraries,” said Nikki Cowart, president of Cy-Fair AFT. “We want leaders who understand our schools because they’ve spent time in our schools, and that’s exactly what we’ve won in this election.”
“While there’s more work to do to make this board representative of the community and responsive to its needs, this victory turns the page on a dark chapter in this district’s history,” said Zeph Capo, president of Texas AFT. “The trustees defeated last night routinely pushed the school board into a hard right turn to the extremist fringe, and voters said enough.”
