This November, we have the opportunity to send another union member to the Texas Senate. That’s why Texas AFT’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) is proud to endorse Taylor Rehmet in the special election for Texas Senate District 9. A veteran, union president, and working-class Texan, Rehmet will bring real-world experience and deep commitment to public service to the Texas Senate, a body where it is sorely needed.
From his beginnings in a working-class family, through his service in the U.S. Air Force, to his leadership as president of both his local and state chapters of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW), Rehmet has fought for dignity, safety, and respect on the job.
Rehmet stands for fully funding public schools, expanding vocational and trade pathways, and ending the privatization of education. He will oppose any efforts to continue or expand the voucher scheme passed this year, which will strip resources from neighborhood schools, and likewise, he will push for the protections that educators deserve.
Texas ranks 45th in Oxfam’s 2025 Best States to work report, with dismal scores on wage policies, worker protections, and rights to organize. We need more union members in the Legislature if we want to change that.
Rehmet prioritizes workers’ rights, including restoring collective bargaining, repealing anti-union laws, and reclassifying gig workers to ensure benefits. Affordable housing, tenant rights, fair property tax reform, veterans’ care, and infrastructure that serves people — not special interests — form the core of his agenda.
With Taylor Rehmet in the state Senate, Texas AFT COPE believes constituents of Senate District 9 and Texans across the state will have a steadfast ally who listens, acts, and fights for public schools, for educators, and for working Texans.
