You may have heard that the legislature this summer created a new funding system for textbooks and electronic instructional materials. Unfortunately, the legislative action left too little time for materials to be ordered in timely fashion for the new school year beginning in just a couple of weeks. The materials that need to be requisitioned for the coming school year include supplemental science materials essential to prepare students for more rigorous state achievement tests.
One hold-up was the need for the Texas Education Agency to calculate and publish the district-by-district allocations of funding. The allocations were announced on August 3, and TEA began accepting requisitions for instructional materials on August 8. Commissioner of Education Robert Scott has determined that 70 percent of each entity’s two-year allocation will be available for the 2011-2012 school year and 30 percent for the 2012-2013 school year.
