Federal Focus on Anti-Bullying Efforts

Earlier this month the U.S. Department of Education held the first-ever National Summit on Bullying to draw attention to this all-too-common discipline problem. Now the feds have followed up with the launch of a new Web site, www.bullyinginfo.org, intended as a one-stop site for federal resources on bullying. In announcing the new Web site, the Department also noted that its Office for Civil Rights will vigorously investigate complaints of bullying and harassment.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said: “As educators, as state and local officials, and at the federal level, we simply have not taken the problem of bullying seriously enough. It is an absolute travesty of our educational system when students fear for their safety at school, worry about being bullied or suffer discrimination and taunts because of their ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, disability or a host of other reasons. The fact is that no school can be a great school until it is a safe school first.”
