Regional hearings on state special-education plan set for April 12 and 16

The Texas Education Agency is seeking public comments at two public hearings on a draft strategic plan for special education prompted by federal findings that eligible students in Texas have been wrongfully denied access to services.

The first hearing will open for witness sign-ups from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, at Education Service Center Region 1, 1900 West Schunior, in Edinburg. Testimony then will be taken starting at 1 p.m. The second hearing will adhere to the same schedule on Monday, April 16, at Education Service Center Region 10, 400 East Spring Valley Road, in Richardson.

Those who cannot attend either hearing can still submit comments on the draft plan by email at TexasSPED@TEA.texas.gov. Email comments will be accepted through noon on Wednesday, April 18. A final response to the federal findings will be sent to the U.S. Department of Education later in April.
