Reports out of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD today show that a large majority of schools voted down a district plan to turn over its campuses to a system of charter schools run by a nonprofit. The superintendent had given teachers at each school a vote on whether to move forward with the plan on their campus. Our union members there–PSJA AFT–actively opposed the plan, which was defeated district-wide 1,448 to 661, with 7 campuses approving it and 35 rejecting it. It is unknown whether the superintendent will push forward with the plan on the campuses voting for approval.
