Teacher Appreciation Week: Locals highlight members going above and beyond

And there’s still time to nominate public service workers for AFT’s sweepstakes

Today brings an end to our celebration of Teacher Appreciation Week. Every year, we have so much to thank all of our teachers for doing, but this year, with our teachers being pushed to their limits having to navigate distance learning in the midst of a pandemic, we all are even more grateful for our teachers and the entire school employee team. Teachers may no longer be face to face with their students, but the impact our teachers have on their classes is still incredibly present.

Northeast Houston AFT celebrated by recognizing outstanding educators from across the Channelview, Galena Park, and Sheldon independent school districts. Every day this past week, the local union posted a picture of a teacher or a team of teachers on Facebook along with a brief biography of how they have gone above and beyond to educate their students during this crisis. Each teacher or team was also awarded a prize for their efforts. Check out Northeast Houston AFT’s Facebook page to see some of the results.

AFT at the national level is celebrating Teacher, Nurse, and Public Service Appreciation weeks with our “Thank a Hero Sweepstakes.” Any teacher, nurse, or public service employee can be nominated, and 50 will be chosen to win $100 gift cards to local restaurants, while an additional 25 will be chosen to win free books from First Book. For more information on how to participate, click here. The first of two drawings will be held May 11, and the sweepstakes will end May 15.
