We expect that those we elect to the presidency and to Congress will help our families and our country thrive. That’s what our members do every day: They create opportunities for our kids and our communities to succeed. But right now, the very things working people rely on — public schools, decent health care, retirement, good wages and a voice at work — are all under attack by this Congress and the current president.
That’s why, on June 14, AFT members are joining allies across the country in taking to the streets in peaceful, non-violent rallies. Not out of anger but out of resolve.
Here in Texas, events have been planned in cities and towns across the state, including a “satirical grassroots street circus” at the Capitol in Austin. In Houston, AFT Secretary-Treasurer Fedrick Ingram will join us.
“No Kings Day,” which falls on Flag Day and the day of President Donald Trump’s planned birthday parade, reflects growing resistance to authoritarian showboating, especially as Trump and leaders in Congress attempt to pay for $4 trillion in tax breaks for the wealthy with cuts to vital public services like Medicaid, Social Security, and public school funding.
Last week, the AFT executive council adopted a resolution, “Mobilizing to Defend Democracy, Expand Opportunity, and Build Power.” Among other items, the resolution affirms our union’s commitment to “fight back against the coordinated attack on education and knowledge — rejecting censorship, curriculum bans, disinvestment, the weaponization of funding, and political interference in our classrooms and research institutions — recognizing that an informed public is essential to a functioning democracy and a free society.”
On June 14, we will do just that: no thrones, no crowns, no kings — just people fighting for a democracy that serves us all. Find an event near you.
