Statement on Texas House school finance plan
Texas American Federation of Teachers President Louis Malfaro commented today on the Texas House school finance plan (House Bill 3):
While we are still reviewing the House school finance bill, we are heartened to see this first critical step, including increased base funding and other much-needed improvements. Since we currently are $2,300 behind the national average in per-pupil funding, we see this as a healthy downpayment on funding our future to the level that will truly support our students and educators.
We look forward to working with legislators to ensure all public school employees receive permanent raises that are not tied to standardized test scores.
